Freshen Up A Wood Tray

Top View CT“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”  Jeremiah 31:25

We all need a little refreshing…even everyday items we use.

I’m finding inspiration from my friend Maria at Maria’s Farmhouse regarding this do it yourself project.  She shared how she gave an old cracker tray a facelift with milk/chalk paint.  I had been holding on to one and never used it for crackers, but thought it was too cute to discard.  Her post moved me beyond vision to making it happen.  See her lovely piece at Maria’s Farmhouse.

Chalk/milk paint is my normal go-to medium.  However, I decided to use liquid acrylic craft paint to freshen up my tray.  I also grabbed two “blah” looking wooden lids off storage containers to paint (the more the merrier!).

Before Makeover.JarsI used painters tape to cover under the lids.Taping lids

Since I planned on only adding a light coat of paint to the wood, I used an electric sander to take off the “crackers” label.CrackersI love this tool!  It’s so much faster than doing it by hand with sandpaper (I have had the sand disk fly off the base, so I recommend using protective gear (eyewear, gloves and thick clothing). 🙂SanderI lightly brushed on turquoise paint and then light blue (leaving both colors visible). another cracker layer

Another quick sanding for a rustic/distressed look.FinishedYeah, finished and looking much more lively!

I placed them in my studio.  I love looking out this window.  The natural light energizes me as I work on pieces.  The view of the barn, field and even the old time feel of the window trim, chippy paint and all, makes me smile.  I plan on planting flowers outside to add to the charm.  I’ll keep you posted as I work to make this space more my own little sanctuary.Full View ContainersThe magic of paint to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary…REfreshed, REpurposed and REmade for something more!Painted ContainersGet a brush and give it a try. 🙂
