DIY Embroidery Hoop Valentine Decor #LOVE

Oh, the beauty of love that makes the heart smile. We are always loved by God and because of His perfect love, we can learn to love others and be loved in return. Because of the Lord’s love we a never alone. Whether married or single, only His love can fill our hearts with joy to make all year long a season of love.
HOOP ART HOW TO: With a little #tlc these embroidery hoops are given a vintage vibe for Valentine’s Day… and (“why not”) everyday of the year!!
ALL YOU NEED:
- Embroidery hoops
- Material/cloth
- Tea bags/coffee
- Yarn and/or felt
- Felting tool kit (optional) or glue/double sided adhesive
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Sandpaper
- Air dry clay
- Mini alphabet stamps
- Wire, bottle cap(s) and/or old keys
This crafty project takes some prep work if you plan to tea/coffee stain your material first (I did: Details for staining HERE). However, it is ‘artist choice’ on what material you want to use for your backdrop to apply your heart design. NOTE: Use 100% cotton cloth for staining.
While the material is soaking in the tea/coffee bath, take your embroidery hoops (pictured are 4″ and 6″ hoops that I purchased at a yardsale for .25 cents) and lightly brush on the paint color(s) you prefer (with a dry brush, I added aqua and red to the outer ring of each set of hoops).
After the paint dries, take fine grit sandpaper and sand it gently around the hoop to distress the paint color to give it a worn, aged look. Then, wipe off any dust with a paper towel.
When your material is dry, place it over the smaller of the hoop (in each set) and then press the larger one over each to secure your material in place.
For my larger hoop design, I drew two hearts on paper first to make a pattern for cutting out my deep red felt hearts. On the smaller hoop, draw (or trace around your heart pattern) the shape directly onto the material.
Then, fill in the shape by using a spiral motion (starting from the center out) to apply the yarn. I used a felting tool to attach and create my heart shape (again, you can achieve a similar look by using tacky fabric glue or double sided adhesive sheets).
Trim off any excess material that is hanging out of the back section of the hoops. NOTE: Make sure your hearts/material are positioned where you like and that the material is taut before trimming off any excess material.
Add any special sentiments with embellishments. I wrapped rusty wire (“ouch,” be careful!!!) around an old key and bottle cap (Wait! How did I attach the wire to the bottle cap??? Metal tools 101…however, a thin metal nail and hammer make a great hole punch too!!!).
My “LOVE” charm was made of air dry white clay (I used an empty pop bottle to make the round shape). Then, I hand stamped my message before drying it (see package for drying time). After it dried, I used a tiny brush and highlighted the letters with red acrylic paint. Lastly, I glued my clay piece into the cap and wrapped the wire end to the top of the hoop.
