Making An Autumn Inspired Garland ~

AUTUMN GARLAND ~
Autumn is such a fun season to make decorations for your home. I made a simple pumpkin garland using canvas, burlap and twine. However, you can use felt, paper, cardboard, etc. for your pumpkins instead of the canvas to make this garland.

Materials ~
Twine, Glue, Canvas, Burlap, Scissors, Paint (Orange, Brown, Green), Paper to protect your work area from getting paint on it.

STEPS ~
Draw a pumpkin shape on paper and cut it out to use as your template to trace on the canvas to make more pumpkins.

Cut out the pumpkins (I made 10 for my garland).

I painted the pumpkins orange (Note: When painting objects try to paint in the direction the item is shaped. I kept my paint strokes curved in the direction a pumpkin is shaped).

Brown for the stem.

Added light green paint to the stem to create depth (Brown paint was dry. However, can be applied when it is brown to blend the two colors).

Another layer of orange paint in a lighter shade.
Added lines with a dark orange permanent marker to give it a touch of realism.

Originally, I was going to sew the pumpkins to the twine. Then, I decided glue was a better option for this project. I rarely use a glue gun because I always burn myself and this was no exception!!! However, it made for a quick bond to adhere the twine to the canvas. Tacky glue would be a great alternative when making this project with kids (or if you want to avoid the step of burning your fingers). 🙂

I cut and tied burlap strips (mocha color) in between the pumpkins.

This garland will add color and fun to a table runner.

Looks great on weathered wood too (barn or picnic table).

I hope this DIY Autumn Garland project inspires you to redeem materials you have around your home and make them into new creations for less to bless hearts and homes. ♥
