“Home Sweet Home” – Hand Painted Sign
“Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home
A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there
Which seek thro’ the world, is ne’er met elsewhere
Home! Home!
Sweet, sweet home!
There’s no place like home
There’s no place like home!
An exile from home splendor dazzles in vain
Oh give me my lowly thatched cottage again
The birds singing gaily that came at my call
And gave me the peace of mind dearer than all
Home, home, sweet, sweet home
There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home!’
– Adapted from American actor and dramatist John Howard Payne’s 1823 opera Clari.
There’s no place like home! For the reminder of it (home sweet home) through song might incite desertion during the Civil War.
This gives new meaning to home and makes me even more grateful for it. It is my happy place and especially when I get a chance to paint.♥
I decided to work on a few Virginia pieces about home and have several ideas on paper. I’m all about fun with a touch of rustic style. “Home Sweet Home” is making her way to the finish line (I still may add a frame around the edges).I started with a plain 12×24 board and painted it grey (liquid acrylic). Then, I painted the image of Virginia in white (liquid acrylic). After sanding it with my electric sander (to smooth the paint a little and expose the edges), I added my ‘home sweet home’ sentiment in pencil. With black acrylic paint I added color to the words. After filling in the ‘M’ (heart) with red, I let the piece cure (harden) for a day.The next day, I used sand paper to distress the words.I wanted to give it a more cozy-warm-rustic feel, so I added a brown wash (1 part paint to 3 parts water) to the entire piece.Which look do you like more…with or without the brown wash?I used a piece of duct tape to pull off some of the red paint. It ended up pulling off more paint than I envisioned. However, after taking a few sections off, it was one of those ‘happy mistakes’ that turned out for the best. ♥ Michelle

I always lean towards a brown wash, but I like the clean crispness of leaving things brighter too! 🙂

Michelle, I love your sign and I really love your happy mistakes. They look so natural like the sign has been around a long time and they have naturally worn out in those areas. Pinning and sharing.

Michelle your home sweet home sign is beautiful! I really love how it turned out, and how you added a image of your state. I’m going to have to try your technique with the duct tape.
